Several years ago a group of men within the Gospel Mission felt a growing need for Christian men to get together for fellowship outside the confines of a church setting. We enjoyed each other’s company and wanted to get to know each other better as friends, so we went for a walk up a mountain in the Lake District and had a meal together afterwards. Our friendship deepened that day and we found that we had a various interests in common and we got to know each other a little better.
In January 2008 we met to plan some activities for the year and about six were arranged which varied from a meal out, to a local walk, to canoeing, to a day of outdoor activities at Christian outdoor centre in the Lake District. We all benefited from the fellowship, the activities and a growing appreciation of each others contribution to the church fellowship. We also understood each other better and it was good to share how we felt about various issues around our faith.
In 2009, we had a full programme of events, in fact something every month, or so. The initial, tentative walk a couple of years ago had grown into regular times of fellowship and the friendship between us has also grown considerably. Psalm 133 (NIV) has a bit to say about this:
How good and pleasant it is
when brothers live together in unity!
It is like precious oil poured on the head,
running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron's beard,
down upon the collar of his robes.
It is as if the dew of Hermon
were falling on Mount Zion.
For there the LORD bestows his blessing,
even life forevermore.
We feel God’s blessing on this development in our church fellowship, and as we continue to share together, play out together, worship together, enjoy God’s creation together, and, deepen our fellowship together, we are sure that this is God’s will for us at this time. It is wonderful that He wants us to get to know each other better in the midst of the things He has made, because one of the spin-offs is that we get to know Him better as well, and that is at the heart of all that we do together.
During 2010 many of the men involved in ‘Gospel Brothers’ have also been involved in working on the refurbishment of The Warehouse and as a consequence the other fellowship activities have had to be curtailed. This is likely to continue to be the case for much of 2011.
